Hi All! Even though I have and read the paper back version,I enjoy reading this chapter again but, online today. It is one if my favorites because i own the spin magazine that was mentioned in this chapter. It touched on the hong kong,California, and perth subjects. This chapter details those moves, To when Inxs got it's following, very interesting. I also love that in gave more details of michaels life in California;I too have heard different stories of how happy or sad he was in California. He appeared to want to move there, kept secret for a long time from his father and brother his mother and his plans. True from my experience of when my parents separated, there weren't a lot of options and rights for mothers. For sanity sake she had to leave, the same applied to my mother. She was on the verge of killing my father because of the verbal and mental abuse she endured. Then I would have been without a mother and father. So she did what she thought was best. Lynne

This chapter was very difficult for my mother to contribute to. It is a very painful to remember those days in Sydney leading up to the departure. It was even harder to recall the trip to the airport and saying goodbye to Rhett. But as she and Michael both relayed to me, it was Michael who was the strong one. He knew there was no turning back. Part of it was his love for Mother, he did not want her to be alone and he wanted a better life for everyone. It is unfortunate that the divorce laws were so antiquainted. Michele Bennett spoke of this later and said that she admired Patricia - she thought it was a brave thing to do.

I agree with Michele. It was an incredibly brave thing for Patricia to do. I read this chapter a couple of days ago, and I've been thinking about it ever since (altho I really went back and forth over whether I should comment about it publicly ). I could just hear the pain and guilt in Patricia's voice as she was writing. As both a child of divorce and now a mother myself, I know from personal experience that no decision regarding one's children, especially in a divorce situation, is easy. But the decision Patricia made to leave Rhett with Kell was one that was so truly out of a mother's pure love for her troubled child that no one in this world has any right at all to second-guess her judgment. It was the best answer for a difficult situation, and I'm sure she agonized, and still does, over whether it was the right decision. On a personal note, I agree with her 100% ... I think Rhett would have had even more difficulties in L.A., and I think she was right in that he needed a strong male figure in his life at that point. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I truly hope she (and Rhett) has forgiven herself for any doubts she had about this. She did it out of love for her child ... the love that continues to this day. In the end, that's what matters the most. lv, Abby

Hi,
I agree with Abby. I don't think L.A. would have worked good on Rhett and I am also convinced he needed a strong male figure.
As a mother myself, I know it must have been a hard decision to make, but a child needs to spend some time with his dad too. That was a good way to force it. It seems like otherwise, Kell would have always escaped from its family life and responsabilities. Seems like a male thing. Very common.
I have lots of respect and admiration for the mom Patricia was. I really appreciate she got the boys into dirt bikes and arranged week-end trips for them. Again, what a great role model.
Laughed a lot at the detached trailer episode! Thought the Crater Face thing was just indecent and mean. Concerned about Michael hiding his marijuana thing from the family.
Thank you Tina and Patricia for sharing with us your private life.
Love, Ge
